A chance encounter for a Loggerhead sea turtle and a recreational diver occurred recently in the African waters of Scottburgh. The turtle swam “right on my chest and just looked at me” said Craig Taylor of Pinetown. That was when Taylor realized the turtle had a plastic bag wrapped around its head and fin.
“It tilted its neck to one side as if to say, ‘please dude, remove the packet’.” Taylor quickly grabbed the bag and began removing it from the turtles head and fin. “It came off quite easily. I turned the turtle around and gave it a gentle push,” he said. “It looked at me as if to say, ‘thanks dude’, and off it glided.” In many forms plastic is extremely prevalent throughout ocean waters so both Taylor and the turtle are lucky to have found each other at the right time, in the right place.
