Screen Shot 2014 08 01 at 2.43.44 PM 201x300 The Biorock Project of Pemuteran: A Hauntingly Beautiful Reef Restoration ProjectOn my search for a new and improved “Octopus Bicycle“, I happened upon this wonderful Award Winning Reef Restoration Project in Indonesia. Many factors such as pollution, cyanide fishing, and coastal erosion have contributed to the deterioration of modern day Indonesian reefs and surrounding Indo-Pacific countries over the past twenty years. Enter the Biorock Project – the brainchild of two scientists who discovered “Electrical Mineral Accretion”, a technology that uses low-voltage currents in seawater that causes dissolved minerals to crystalize and form structures quite similar to limestone, where corals can flourish and grow. The structures, which are anything from old bicycles, metal crabs or Sea Goddesses, have had incredible success. Coral grows at a healthy, rapid rate with an abundance of fish life and invertebrates, as well. The structures themselves are beautiful, as if you’ve stumbled upon ancient runes being claimed by the deep. This site is definitely going onto my “Must Dive” list. More photos and information can be found here and here. On another note, my OctoBike search hasn’t been very fruitful, so feel free to send suggestions my way! I fear I may be doomed to choose the pricy, albeit satisfying, “custom” route. Screen Shot 2014 08 01 at 2.29.53 PM The Biorock Project of Pemuteran: A Hauntingly Beautiful Reef Restoration Project  … More:
