There’s something particularly magical about viewing a reef tank under blue lighting and it now seems that there may be more than just pure aesthetic appreciation on offer for viewers. Researchers from Mid Sweden University have recently published the results of an interesting study in the journal PLOS ONE. The study basically shows that exposure to light in the 460-480nm range (slightly above the actinic spectrum) can enhance both alertness and cognitive function, even outperforming caffeine in certain areas! During the detailed research trials, researchers also noted that the effect seemed to be more pronounced in subjects with blue eyes. You can read the full report HERE. Next time you are looking at your reef in the evening or early morning phases (or even in the day if you have high K lighting), its certainly interesting to consider what subtle effect this activity may be having… possibly waking you up effectively in the morning, or maybe even interfering with sleeping patterns at the other end of the scale?
